We’re halfway through August. I don’t know how but here we are. So, with school on the horizon, it may be time to gently begin integrating some of the routines involved, making September feel more like smooth transition and less like a jump into cold water. Some kids can make the jump easily but others need a little more prep. Here are three examples of how you might do that for them:
Shifting into the same bedtime and morning routines that work best for the school year
Having quiet time every evening to draw, write, whatever – in the same time and place that homework typically fits
Start talking about what to expect (this might include calendars and other visual planning) and how to anticipate and manage any challenges
Nutrition Finding your Venn
It’s fascinating how varied successful nutrition strategies can be. From fully vegan diets to meat-only diets. From detailed protocols rooted in “science” to fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants intuitive eating. Not every strategy works for every person. But the ones that do share three things in common:
They make you less likely to over-consume by strategic constraints. Time-restricted eating. Macro splits. Eliminating certain types of foods… all roads lead here.
They skew toward more nutrient-dense foods (typically, veggies and fruit, lean protein, unsaturated fats) and away from ultra-processed foods (hyper-palatable, shelf-stable foods that you can identify by brand – even when out of the package).
They have clear rules that fit your schedule, abilities, and preferences – and eliminate ambiguity and decision-making.
The takeaway here is that if a particular strategy isn’t working for you personally, don’t worry; there’s probably another one that gets the same job done in a different way. Look for these three factors:

On our most recent Dad call, we talked about five time-management strategies, including using your calendar for to-dos (e.g. putting exercise in your calendar) and blocks of deep work. However, the most popular strategy used by our group is writing down the top 1-3 things you want to accomplish each day.
It got me thinking…
What are the top 1-3 things that will disrupt you when it comes to doing the real work? Are they predictable? And do you have strategies for each of them?
