The inheritance

What are the values we actively discuss with our kids? Our recollections often include what was missing: financial literacy; physical literacy, values; how to be a good friend. What did you miss but what did you get? And then how do you decide what to pass on? The answer begins with presence. You have to notice before you can respond.

Podcast interview

I joined Stamina Lab’s Glen Lubert to share some exercise concepts that are bigger than the gym—including maintaining optionality by staying pre-loaded.

A more imaginative past

I’m am reading—and deeply enjoying—*The Dawn of Everything* by the late David Graeber and David Wengrow. It’s got me thinking about perspective-taking. In reexamining the archaeological evidence—we are often examining how people responded to the evidence at the time. Maybe not always a super accurate place. Maybe the first stage of the book is to clarify that the differences from 20,000 years ago are tiny in terms of human development—and that there was plenty of wisdom, creativity, and insight to go around.

Nutrition

Some foods have a bit of a halo around them. We’d be more critical if them under different circumstances. Examples include granola bars, protein bars, plant-based meat substitutes, and most cereals and oatmeals. Most health-branded snacks are in there too.

All of these are ultra-processed foods. Ultra-processed isn’t automatically a problem BUT ultra-processed foods do tend to be optimized for profit, not your health or environmental footprint. They deserve a fair bit of scrutiny.

As a thought experiment, if any of these have ever flown under your radar, it’s worth asking yourself how their presentation affected your perception.

Retreat

We’ve got a spot! Do you have any questions about our September Wolfe Island retreat? For example, will it be excellent? Yes. You can book a time to learn more about it here.
